Bronze Monuments

We consider a monument to be any sculpture life-size or larger. Doug prefers to create monument sculptures that are life plus 1/4 in size, especially if they are to be placed outdoors, because a smaller scale can get lost in the expanse of the out-of-doors.

Exceptions would be if the subject is especially large like the dinosaurs or the elephant, which he is doing now that is 13’ at the shoulders, or if the project is commissioned life-size for a purpose.

Doug Van Howd’s monument sculptures are as lifelike in detail and as full of movement as his small sculptures, making them very special.

Doug has created bronze monuments for many purposes such as estate landscape art, schools, museums, hotels, airports and business complexes, throughout the world ~ the finest available in outdoor art.

There are tax write-off opportunities available for public art donations. Public museums, universities and cities are examples of public places that are enhanced by monument sculptures.

bronze-sculptures-life-size-indian-picBronze is the most popular metal for cast metal sculptures; a cast bronze sculpture is often called simply a “bronze”. Common bronze alloys have the unusual and desirable property of expanding slightly just before they set, thus filling the finest details of a mold. Their strength and ductility lack of brittleness is an advantage when figures in action are to be created, especially when compared to various ceramic or stone materials such as with marble sculpture.

These qualities allow the creation of extended figures, as in Jeté, or figures that have small cross sections in their support, such as the equestrian statue of Richard the Lionheart.

Modern statuary bronze is 90% copper and 10% tin; older bronze alloys varied only slightly from this composition. But the value of the bronze for other uses is disadvantageous to the preservation of sculptures; few large ancient bronzes have survived, as many were melted down to make weapons in times of war or to create new sculptures commemorating the victors, while far more stone and ceramic works have come through the centuries, even if only in fragments. Making bronzes is highly skilled work, and a number of distinct casting processes may be employed, including lost-wax casting and its modern-day spin-off investment casting, sand casting and centrifugal casting, from Wikipedia. Please stop in and have a great cup of cocoa with us anytime.
